General Note
  • This is the story of Horacio Pereira, the grandchild of a slave taken from Africa to Latin America long after the abolition of slavery. Horacio is a family man who works as a lighthouse keeper on a solitary island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Some years ago, a series of unexpected events changed his life forever. Horacio survived a dreadful boat accident, and shortly thereafter - with the hopes of earning some money to better his family's economic situation - he joined the Blue Helmets, Uruguay's peacekepping force of the United Nations. He was sent to serve in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country of his ancestors.
  • Horacio's journey, motivated at first by economic ends, soon proved to be a journey to his past, to his roots, to the origins of his family's poverty. His experiences in the Congo affected him in ways that he had never anticipated. Now that he is about to retire, he returns one last time to the land where his story began.
