  • On the 7th of March, I came across an article in the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter about a six-year-old German-Iraqi boy who had been found dead at the bottom of a swimming-pool in a small town in eastern Germany in 1997. His parents a German mother and Iraqi father soon began to suspect that he did not drown but was murdered by a gang of Neo-Nazis. In October 1997, the family turned to the police. The police inquiry was still in progress three years later when, in November 2000, the "Joseph Affair" became the subject of enormous publicity in the German media. Three suspects were pointed out having killed the boy. On the 28th of November, only five days after the case has been made public, the media began to raise suspicions, speculating that the whole murder theory had perhaps been constructed by the boy's mother. The prosecutor initiated a preliminary investigation of the parents and a new autopsy of the boy's dead body was ordered. -- Der Fall Joseph is constructed from ten different narratives: the family's, the prosecutor's, testimony from an eyewitness, a police cross-examination, excerpts from reports in the media, and others. All of the narratives have been constructed to appear coherent, logical and credible, but they all differ markedly from each other. The only thing that everyone can agree on is that on the 13th of June 1997, at ten to three in the afternoon, a six year-old boy was found dead at the bottom of a swimming pool in a little town in eastern Germany. I have chosen to emphasize the fact that subjective motives can contribute to creating an event and that an individual interpretation can become the accepted truth. Instead of trying to establish the truth, I am interested in discussing the process of looking back on a series of events and seeing how the choices made at the time underpin and influence the final result. Whose opinion is it that ultimately wins preferential right of interpretation? And why?
