Anmärkning: Allmän Peter Gidal has been a central figure in British artists' film for almost four decades. He was an active member of the London Filmmakers Co-operative, where he was the cinema programmer for several years in the 1970s, and since the late 1960s he has produced a body of work which has consistently challenged audiences to examine the conditions of meaning in film. Rigorous and provocative, Gidal's films are a sustained attempt to reveal the codes and conventions of viewing, and to address the formal fundamentals of film politically. Often identified with 'structural-materialism', he has been a key theorist of this strand of filmmaking practice and his books Structural Film Anthology (BFI, 1976), and Materialist Film (Routledge, 1988) have been hugely influential.
