The contemporary Latin-American artists featured in this title follow the same conceptual premise in their creative output: their subject is the materiality of their work, often interfering with the original substance of everyday objects and placing them in a new context. With this approach they intensify awareness on the part of the viewer for the form and materiality of things. The artists also fall back on existing cultural reference systems. Art as such a system, and especially the history of modernism, is a fundamental point of reference. But while the artists quote the language of form grounded in the ideology of modernism they proceed to break this up again in their treatment of objects, or reverse their meaning on a semantic level. This catalogue has been published in conjunction with the exhibition of the same name at Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen, August - November 2009. English and German text.
