This richly illustrated volume examines 25 major paintings by master artists from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Holland. Published in conjunction with the 1999 exhibition of the same name organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum, A Moral Compass gathers 25 full-color art reproductions, numerous detail photographs, and informative discussion of this important artistic period in Netherlandish art history.
Including individual descriptive entries by Henry Luttikhuizen, curator of the exhibit, the book also features essays by three prominent art historians -- Arthur Wheelock Jr., Lawrence Goedde, and Mariet Westermann. These essays place the paintings in their cultural context and explore how they reflect the prevailing economic prosperity, moral convictions, and cultural climate of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Holland.
