Artists' involvement with books is of course as old as the book itself; the technology of printing severed that relationship somewhat, but other technologies (lithography in the 19th century, and desktop publishing in the 20th) have again enabled artists to work directly in the book format. The author, a librarian and instructor of modern art history theory at Chelsea College of Art and Design in England, has been involved with artists' books for 16 years. He discusses the history of artists' books in the context of technological changes and various art movements. Reference materials are provided by a bibliographic listing of some 500 artists' books, an exhibition chronology, and practical advice for the collector and librarian. Illustrated with b&w photos of some of the catalogued works. Distributed by Ashgate. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
