This volume brings together Professor Ling's main papers on stuccowork and painting in Roman Italy, work which over the last thirty years has made a major contribution to our understanding of Roman interior decoration. It includes his studies on the origins of stucco decoration and of landscape painting, and primary publications of stuccowork from Pozzuoli (ancient Puteoli) and Baia. Also included are articles on iconographical themes, such as the rape of Hylas and the mysterious 'cylinders' which feature on athletics scenes. The volume concludes with two recent papers, one focusing on tomb-chambers, the other on dining rooms, which probe the relation of paintings to their architectural and functional context.
