This stunning photographic volume presents, through a journey of exploration, an extensive collection of ground-breaking images that reflect Europe's past and lead us into the new millennium. We are heading into the twenty-first century with changing identities, a changing Europe, and a changing medium of photography. Multi-culturalism and a greater understanding of race and gender are defining a new Europe: different, autonomous, independent.

In ten chapters, Continental Drift features the innovative work of ten photographers from Britain and continental Europe who examine the changing face of Europe in a dynamic variety of photographic studies. These range from a series of witty images of stereotypes and iconography associated with different countries (Martin Parr) to the stark, Scandinavian landscape photography of one of Europe's last great wildernesses (Jorma Puranen), from portraits of Belgian youth from diverse ethnic back-grounds (Marie-Jo Lafontaine), to a moving black-and-white documentation on the effects a pipeline through the Caucasus has on the local population and the region (Stanley Greene). Each chapter is introduced by texts or interviews with the photographers, lending insight into the powerful images and the urgency and significance of their contexts.

The book Continental Drift is being published to coincide with the nationwide British Year of Photography and the exhibition series "Photo '98".
