The Atlantic Wall is one of the last major defence lines of the 20th Century, built by German occupation forces during the period 1939-1944 along the coasts of France. Channel Islands, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway. The `wall' consists of over 10,000 heavy concrete bunkers, some small, some large, but all impressive in terms of cost and labour involved. To mark the European Union's Culture 2000. Italian landscape photographer Guido Guidi was invited to record the architecture and history of these imposing structures. His beautiful colour photographs capture the menace and impenetrable solidity of the bunkers and give narrative to the lost lives of the prisoners of war who suffered and died whilst being forced to construct this line of defence. Guido Guidi succeeds in capturing the cold alien and unwelcoming nature of the bunkers, whilst preserving the cultural significance of their position in Europe's history.
