Quotidiana introduces a theme that traverses all the visual arts of the twentieth century, namely the relationship between avant-garde culture and everyday life. The art of the avant-garde is seen as a cultural activity removed from the "banal" reality of everyday existence, yet often this does not correspond with the artists' own intentions. From Braque, Picasso, Duchamp, Rauschenberg, and Warhol to Nan Goldin, Sophie Calle, Beat Streuli, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, and Rirkrit Tiravanija, artistic expression has been deeply concerned with commonplace experience. With essays by a team of internationally renowned curators -- David Ross, Nicholas Serota, Ida Gianelli, Thelma Gulden, Jonathan Watkins, and Georgio Verzotti -- and over 200 works by masters of modern art and leading contemporary artists, this book is a comprehensive exploration of the tension between the avant garde and the everyday that has characterized so much of 20th century art.
